Whitehill Primary School

Together we Shine Academically, Personally & Socially

Welcome to Whitehill Primary School

On behalf of our children, staff, governors and the wider Whitehill community, it gives me enormous pleasure to welcome you to our school.

I have been incredibly proud to serve as Headteacher of Whitehill Primary School for the past 11 years, and during that time I have seen our school continue to grow, develop and respond to the needs of our children and families. After 11 years, my commitment to Whitehill is as strong as ever. It is a very special community and one that I feel genuinely privileged to lead.

At Whitehill, we believe that every child deserves the very best education and the opportunity to succeed. Our children come to us with different experiences, strengths and needs, and our role is to recognise the potential in every one of them. We want children to leave Whitehill not only having achieved academically, but as confident, resilient and compassionate young people who believe in themselves and understand the contribution they can make to the world around them.

Our school motto, “Shine like a Star”, captures that ambition. We encourage every child to Shine Academically, Shine Personally and Shine Socially. Success at Whitehill is therefore about much more than results. It can be mastering something that once seemed difficult, discovering a love of reading, performing or representing the school, showing kindness to someone who needs it, developing independence or simply having the confidence to try something new.

We are very proud of the experiences we provide for our children. We believe learning should extend beyond the classroom, which is why enrichment is such an important part of life at Whitehill. Our children benefit from Forest School, sporting opportunities, educational visits and experiences made possible through our own school minibus. We want children to explore, investigate, take appropriate risks and experience things that they will remember long after they have left us.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum. From the foundations established through phonics to our whole-school approach to reading, we want every child to become a confident reader who discovers the enjoyment that books can bring. Our library bus is an important part of our reading culture, while our investment in technology, including Chromebooks, iPads and Micro:bits, gives children opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills they need for an increasingly digital world.

Equally important is ensuring that children feel safe, happy and that they belong. We understand that, at different points in their lives, children and families may need additional help. Inclusion is central to our approach. Our staff work hard to understand individual children and remove barriers to their learning, whether those needs are academic, social, emotional or behavioural. Alongside our teaching and support staff, our Learning Mentor and specialist services help us provide additional support when children and families need it most.

We have high expectations, but we combine those expectations with care, encouragement and support. We want Whitehill to be a school where children behave well because they understand respect and responsibility, where classrooms are calm and purposeful, and where children are proud of themselves, their work and their school. We celebrate achievement in all its forms and make sure children know that their effort, progress, kindness and contribution matter.

But buildings, resources and opportunities alone do not make a great school. The heart of Whitehill is its people.

Our children continue to make me proud through their resilience, humour, confidence, kindness and respect for others. Our staff care deeply about the children they work with, and the relationships we build with our families are fundamental to what we achieve together.

Having spent 11 years as Headteacher, I know this community extremely well. I also know that a school can never stand still. Children change, communities change and education changes, which means we must continue to reflect, improve and be ambitious. My commitment is to ensure that Whitehill continues to move forward while holding firmly to what makes our school special: knowing our children, caring about our families, having high expectations and believing that every child can shine.

I am enormously proud to be the Headteacher of Whitehill Primary School, but above all, I am proud of our children and our community.

I hope our website gives you a flavour of life at Whitehill and the opportunities available to our children. However, no website can truly capture the atmosphere of a school, the relationships between children and adults, or the sense of community you experience when you walk through the doors.

If you are considering Whitehill for your child, I warmly invite you to come and visit us, meet our children and staff, and experience for yourself what makes Whitehill such a special place.

Mr Steven Hall
